User Reviews about TomTom ONE 140 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

There aren't a lot of times I depend on a GPS unit to get me where I need to go but when I need it I want it to work without the need for a technical support person. The TomTom Ease is exactly that product.

Download the TomTom software to your computer, install it and plug in your TomTom using the included USB cable. That's about it. It will automatically check for updates and install them for you. You can choose different voices and there are many, many different Points of Interest (POIs) to download to your TomTom. (I like the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and the Trader Joe's POI groups.)

The Ease is simple to operate and finds the satellite signals fast. I didn't even have any problems with the satellite signals inside my home while I was playing around with the unit. I can't say that about my old GPS unit.

The choice between 2D and 3D maps is nice. The one option I would like to see included with the 2D map is the ability to always have your direction of travel facing up. The map always has North up which means that if you are driving South and need to make a right turn the screen displays the car driving down and turning to your left. It can be confusing if you need to glance quickly down because you missed the verbal command.

I like the option to change voices. I downloaded some of the free voices. My complaint there was that the recorded voices don't speak the street names. To hear the street name spoken you have to use one of the male or female computer voices. I prefer to hear "in 200 feet turn right onto Smith Street" instead of "in 200 feet turn right." It helps to have that street name if you are driving in a congested area. On long car trips the funny voices might be more interesting.

I drove 150 miles (one way) this weekend using the TomTom. The directions were spot on. Around my home I like some of the back roads better than the main roads but the Ease recalculated quickly each time I would deviate from the prescribed route.

Surprisingly, the feature I found that I liked the best was the speed limit display. The speed limit changes frequently heading in and out of mountain towns on 4 lane roads. The Ease updated the speed limit within seconds after passing the speed limit signs. So I always knew if I was going too fast. It allowed me to relax more and enjoy the conversation in the car instead of worrying about missing a speed zone change. Unfortunately, the secondary roads did not have the speed limits loaded but the main highways were always correct.

The Ease is compact and easy to use and I would definitely buy another one. -- Perfect Family GPS Unit
the only downfall with this gps is that sometimes it can take up to five minutes for it to find your location. if that happens i usually just turn it off and then on and in about ten seconds youll fine. -- good gps
It seemed ok to start with but using it around New York city was a problem. I drove up the west side wanting to go over Brooklyn Bridge but for some reason it got me as far as battery park then sent me round and round in circles!!! In the end I got so frustrated paid the $5.50 toll for battery tunnel. Also I note that the arrow was not in correct position where I was so, instead of turning right at the junction I was at I drove past it thinking it was next right. OK for using out of town but difficult to follow in city -- ok but....
Wanted one and bought this one. Works great and is fine. If I had to do again, I might get one with the bigger screen, but no biggie. Great gadget for the money! -- Great for the price
I own a Garmin (comparative in price)and I have tried this TomTom. The TomTom is very easy to use and set up is great. It's very compact. I like how you can download other owner's street corrections. It also has a lot of customizing features.

What I don't like.
The TomTom seems to always pick out of the way directions both in distance and in time. Garmin picks the same routes I would have taken 9 out of 10 times.

You have to manually change the display from night to day. I leave very early in the morning so I need night-time display and then I have to change it back to day-time when I'm leaving work to go home. Not a big deal, but the Garmin does it automatically based on sunrise and sunset times (a nice feature while you are driving). You also cannot change the brightness on the display (you can on the Garmin).

If you zoom out on the display, it doesn't stay zoomed out. As soon as you come to the next calculated turn, it zooms in and stays zoomed in. The Garmin also zooms in for the turn but then zooms back out to where you set it.

After using both products, I love my Garmin and I am putting my TomTom on Ebay. -- Garmin is much better
