User Reviews about Garmin Geko 201 Waterproof Hiking GPS (Yellow)

My Geko 201 was subject to the so-called Y2K+10 bug. For any time period after January 5th, 2010 the GPS device incorrectly calculated the date. This resulted in an incorrect (dysfunctional) almanac which caused an excessive amount of time to be taken to acquire satellites. This problem was apparently fixed with the March 25th, 2010 release of firmware update 2.90. Otherwise a nice compact, easy-to-use GPS, but with limited battery life. -- Subject to the Y2K+10 bug, but fixed!
Worked as adv. Don't let the small size fool you. Does what it's supposed to. "Small Wonder" -- Geko 201
This is about the most perfect GPS ever made. I tried to replace it recently, but I couldn't find a newer model that offers what this model does. It's small, light, waterproof, and cheap. It also gives me a 10000-point tracklog and is easy to use.

Maps are something you should buy on paper because paper will still work if you are out of AAA batteries.

The downside is that this thing really needs a place to attach a lanyard. Beyond that, this is a great GPS. I've had mine for over four years now. -- Four years old and still top of the line
This is my second Geko 201. I use the product primarily in confirming stopping points during trips to surface faclities of coal mines. The Geko fits conveniently in my shirt or jacket pocket. I have learned how to angle the screen of the Geko in my hand so that I can take a digital image of the long-lat-elev-date-time readings for my record keeping purposes. The product works well in the USA and internationally and is relatively trouble-free, ... although I had to send my first Geko back to Garmin to get it repaired for a blank screen. -- Geko 201 Handheld GPS
